If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and wondered whether your skin could be better, this post is for you. Your face is the important part of your body. It’s the first impression. I don’t know a single girl who doesn’t want that Victoria’s Secret model glow. Myself included. This product is how they get it, literally. Beautycounter’s head of product development does their makeup. This post is a PSA to help everyone achieve healthier looking skin. How? Face oil.
Living in LA, I felt pretty average when it came to my skin. Being in the nation’s entertainment capital, it’s easy to understand why. It’s the land of beautiful people! You’d think the sidewalk was a runway at times and that can be downright intimidating. That said, a lot of what you see can be bought. I can’t tell you how many times people asked me if my hair was real. It is. I’m a little more “natural” when it comes to my beauty routine which is why I’m writing this post. I’m also a huge believer in fixing the foundation (your skin) before layering on a ton of product.
After moving to the Midwest 6 months ago, I’ve been inundated with questions about my skin. So many questions that I wanted to answer this question for everyone to read. Here are the types of questions I’ve been getting. Straight up, how old am I? This was asked during a meeting while I was mid-sentence. What are the makeup products I use? Have been texted, emailed, IG DM’ed, and interoffice IM’ed about this one. Hint: it starts with your skincare regimen, not your makeup (although great products help). And more obviously, what is my skin care routine? Plain and simple.
As it turns out, my skin seems to be good enough for people to notice. And not just to those in the industry like makeup artists. Of course I have the occasional blemish. I also have an rare dry patch. Some days I wake up, look in the mirror, and just want to go back to bed. Ugh, Mondays. But generally speaking, I have it pretty good. For that, I’m grateful – in part to genetics but more importantly, to skincare products.
Here’s why. If there’s one product I’d recommend out of my full skincare routine, it’s Beautycounter face oil. I’m talking if you HAVE TO pick just one product to try, go with Beautycounter face oil. While I personally believe in the benefits of the entire routine (and have an 8 month record of zero zits since I started mine), face oil is the most bang for your buck in terms of results.
There are 3 kinds of people in the world:
1. People who use face oil and have amazing skin.
2. People who have heard about it but never tried it for one reason or another.
3. And my favorite group: people who have never heard of it and look at me like I just said something in a foreign language.
If you’ve read to here, you’re probably group 2 or 3. So let my tell you why you need to go buy Beautycounter face oil right now.
Instant results. Moving to Chicago was a testament to how poorly the average moisturizer works. My legs were ashy and broke into a red rash within the first 2 weeks of moving. Not cute. It wasn’t until I started incorporating Beautycounter’s body oil into my routine that my legs went back to normal. The same applies to your face. Luckily, I’ve been using their Balancing Face Oil forever so I didn’t have any embarrassing rashes on my face. Wouldn’t that have been quite the first impression in our new city? Moisturizers can contain waxes or water which seal moisture in while keeping the oils out. That means your skin isn’t benefiting from the nutrients in essential oils like antioxidants and omega fatty acids. Think of oils as vitamins for the skin. You want to absorb everything you can!
Anti aging properties. If your skin is dehydrated and flaky, fine lines and wrinkles are going to show up FASTER. Imagine your skin like a grape. Either help it maintain its plumpness by hydrating or have it dry up like a raisin. The best way to hydrate is through oils for the reasons above.
Face oil is only for people with dry skin. Not true. While it’s great for people with dry skin, it’s also great for people with oily skin. If you have oily skin, your glands are overproducing oil because they feel like they have to. Jojoba, rose, and grape seed oil can actually help regulate this problem. In time, balancing out your skin to stop the overproduction. It can help clear your pores of excess sebum, reducing inflammation and irritation.
All 3 of Beautycounter’s face oils have at least one of these essential oils. Have you ever tried to train your hair to not get oily? It’s a process but it’s worth it. Everyone wants to achieve that “day 5” perfectly dirty hair look. I used to have to wash my hair daily but as soon as I stopped striping the oils out with shampoo, I was able to go days without a wash. Even with a workout in there which I’m (somewhat) embarrassed to admit!
Breakouts. People associate oil with oily skin and therefore, with breakouts. Also a myth. Naturally derived face oils don’t give you acne, synthetic oils do. That’s a huge part of why I always use Beautycounter products. With a mission to create safe personal care products (read more here), they’re the only brand has vetted every single ingredient to make sure it’s not doing any harm to me or to the environment. If you think drugstore or Sephora products can guarantee you that, think again. Some may, but read the labels.
It’s multi-purpose. If your makeup is getting a little cake-y, use a drop of oil to refresh your look. It will smooth everything out. You’ll also find that after using face oil for awhile, you actually have to use less foundation and concealer. There is less to cover up so you will end up using less makeup! Face oil may reduce the look of scars. It can also be used to remove makeup, fight frizz, soften your cuticles, and as a lip balm in a pinch. Heck yes.
If you’re still not convinced, the only advice I have is to just to trust me and try it. I can’t tell you how many of my friends and family have given me the skeptical eye brow raise when I tell them about face oil only to come back to me a week later gushing about the product. I always recommend Beautycounter’s No. 3 Balancing Face Oil for a first timer. Face oil is easy to incorporate into your existing routine and honestly, their’s is the best. Trust me, I’ve tried an exhaustive list of face oils by various brands and this one always comes out on top! If you’re looking to brighten your skin, try the No. 1 and if you’re looking to plump, try the No. 2. If you don’t know what you need, go with No. 3 – it smells amazing. Note that it may take a few nights to get used to the ylang ylang scent.
Not sure how to use it? It’s easy. If you’re just starting out, drop 1-2 drops into your palm with your night cream. Mix them together and gently press it into your face and neck. Very gently. Note that I didn’t say “rub”. If you have extra product on your hands, take it down to your chest. Once your skin gets used to face oil, you can increase the number of drops to 2-3 and so on. If it’s winter or your skin is feeling a little dry, use more too. You’ll start to know how much oil your skin needs based on how it feels pretty quickly. The Beautycounter face oil will last about 6 months if you’re using 1-2 drops nightly.
I’ve been using face oil for 3 years so I am really generous with my oil to night cream ratio. I mean really generous. Since I use so much of it (morning and night), I usually have to replace about every 3 months. Especially during winter. More than a few times this past season I found myself ONLY putting oil on my face. Like I said, this is the one product that has made the biggest difference in my skin. It’s the beauty industry’s best kept secret and now you know about it.
Do you use face oil? Are you going to try it now that you know what it can do?
PS. I just got the face masks and face mists that you see here so I’ll let you know how they are! I can’t get over how gorgeous the pink packaging is on the Facial Mask. I hoping to try one tonight with Matt – I’ll share over on Instastories! And this post was NOT sponsored – I just truly believe in these products!

Try this one to regulate it! 1-2 drops isn’t going to impact your skin that much overnight if incorporated into your standard routine. I had combination skin and I’ve found that since using face oil, my oily areas have become less oily. My skin is more balanced overall!

I’ve always had a go at mixing oils, or if none made up I use coconut oil jojoba oil. I’m 60 and don’t look anything like, Apart from this I think the secret to youthful skin is, don’t smoke (when I gave up my face which fortunately was younger looking – dropped another 10 years). Not too much sugar – it ravages your whole body including your face.
