Green Peplum Top | Black Skinny Jeans | Over the Knee Boots | White Satchel | Black Fur Hooded Coat | White Pom Beanie | Black Sunglasses | Lipstick in Miss ConductÂ
With the polar vortex that has hit Chicago, even my layers have layers. Last week was the first moment I caught myself thinking ‘why do people live here?’ I told Matt that and he didn’t find it very funny. He panicked that 3 months into our move, I wanted to move back! I had to reassure him that I was half kidding. While these temperatures are so cold I can’t even describe them, I’m loving the city and know that come May, it will all be worth it! Only half a year left, ha!
Meanwhile, I’ve been learning about the art of layering (and yes, it’s an art). I’ve found it’s more difficult to keep that feminine shape. Cable knit sweaters and fleece lined anything get bulky fast. Very bulky. So when you’ve forgotten what your waistline looks like, what do you do? Create one!
This deep green peplum top does that for you. The flared hem makes me feel like I didn’t mail it in. Like I actually tried (which I sort of did). The top isn’t thick so you can layer warmer pieces like chunky sweaters over it if needed. Generally, I wear these tees almost every day for a base layer and these camisoles if my neckline is a little lower. The tees are my absolute favorite – I bought 4 more in the Black Friday sale! They fit incredibly well and don’t look boxy. Which, on my broad shoulders, is a miracle!
We took these photos a few weeks back when Matt was here so I’m not as layered up as I would be now but I still wear this parka regularly! It’s lightweight but warm. I hate carrying around an enormous jacket once were inside so I’ve been playing around with the minimum amount of clothing that still keeps me warm! I never knew I had so much to learn about coats! And these black skinny jeans are only $65 and don’t fade!
What is your favorite way to layer?

It’s amazing what you learn or don’t depending on where you’ve lived! I’m adjusting to living in Seattle as well. Not quite as extreme as Chicago, though!
