Continuing my mini series on moving to the Midwest to celebrate my anniversary here, today’s post is all about beauty must haves! When I first moved to Chicago, I thought to myself “I got this, I have great skin“. I was wrong. Very wrong. So after spending 7 months of the past year trying to revive life into my legs so they didn’t look like a molting alligator, I found the 5 must have beauty products for fall.
PS. There’s going to be a huge giveaway in Instagram Stories tonight so make sure you’re following along!
When it comes to your fall beauty routine, it’s all about preparation for winter. Your skin is always showing and it’s incredibly awkward, not to mention uncomfortable, when it’s not cooperating. You notice. People notice. Your confidence level might take a dip. It’s just not a good feeling. While skincare can be overwhelming for some, I’m going to break down my 5 favorite products to make sure your skin is glowing this season. These beauty must haves really turned things around for me. Like when Matt drags me to another baseball game and there’s free wifi so I can browse Instagram the whole time. Game changer!
Before I jump in, I wanted to announce something that I could not be more excited for. I’ve officially signed up to be a Beautycounter Consultant! If you’ve been following me for awhile, you’ve heard me talk about this brand and their social mission so many times. I am pumped to finally be playing a more important role in spreading the knowledge of safe beauty while building my business! Stay tuned for more on what this means!
7 BEAUTY MUST HAVES FOR FALL
1. Face Oil.
When it comes to healthy looking skin, this is my secret. Every single time I get asked about my skin, my answer is 2 words long: face oil. While I’m a firm believer in a full skincare routine, face oil is the one product that makes the most impact. If I had to recommend just one product to revamp your skin, it would be this. If you’re thinking to yourself that your skin is already oily or that you don’t have dry skin, read this post on the most popular myths about face oil. You might learn a little something. You’re welcome in advance!
For directions, read this post on why you should be using face oil!
2. Body Oil.
My legs looked like some snapshot from a National Geographic article about Death Valley for the first 6 months of living in Chicago. Not to mention they were covered in red, itchy blotches. I tried it all: every lotion labeled “for severely dry skin”, body butter, and creams that were as thick as my toothpaste. My bathroom cabinet looked like I was operating a lotion store. Nothing worked. It was the one time I’ve been grateful for all the layers you have to wear in this Midwest cold. Until I started using body oil with my lotion that is. Within a few weeks, my rashes went away and my legs no longer flaked like I was some creature you’d find at the pet store. Hallelujah!
Directions to use: body oil is very similar to face oil. Put a few pumps in your regular moisturizer to really up the moisture factor.
3. Hair Oil.
Are you noticing a theme? Oils are your best friend. I don’t care where you live, they should be part of your routine. If you live in a warmer climate, you get the luxury of using them sparingly. Lucky you. If you live elsewhere, load up! I put hair oil on almost every day (except when I’m planning to curl it). I’m all about infusing my strands with the nutrients they need so they aren’t as brittle as those leafless tree branches that line Michigan Avenue in January.
Fun fact: when we went to Greece earlier in the summer, the only 2 hair care products I brought with me were hair oil and split end serum. They were already travel sized so it made packing really easy! My hair had never felt better so I’ve kept it up since I’ve been back and even my hair stylist asked me what products I was using!
4. Hair Mask.
This was one of the hardest things for me to work into my schedule. Having to sit with some substance on my hair for 15 minutes? When was I going to find time for that in my finely tuned morning routine (I shower in the morning)? However, after seeing how much of an impact a hair mask could make, I made time. I try to do one once a week or once every two weeks at least. I’ve tried so many hair masks in the last year as I’ve been trying to repair my hair from a bad dye job, but lately this one is my favorite! While I’m not 100% on the ingredients, I’m waiting for Beautycounter to come out with a safe alternative!
5. Sugar Body Scrub.
I’ve confessed before that exfoliation is key to any skincare routine. But when I talk about skincare, I’m not just talking about your face. I’m also talking about your body. I use this Sugar Body Scrub once a week to brush all the dead skin off my body in the shower. The lemongrass smell is so luxurious and the oil inside adds a little extra moisture before you get out of the shower. It’s like a mini trip to the spa that you can do in the comfort of your own home. If you need more convincing than that, my mother is hooked on this product and she doesn’t use any other beauty products. For Christmas a few years back the only thing on her wish list was this product. Yes, this Sugar Body Scrub is that good.
6. Ambient Lighting Palette.
When it’s mid-January and you’ve lost all hope that winter will end, this palette will give you that glow you need to power through. I’ve talked about this palette a few times on Instagram Stories lately and can’t say enough good things about it. The concept of Hourglass’ Ambient Lighting Powders is simple. If you’ve ever caught a glimpse of yourself in flattering dim light and thought to yourself “damn I look good“, these powders do that to your face. The difference is, they do it all day long. It also happens to have every powder needed in your daily makeup routine in one spot. As a career woman and girl who is always on the go, this little time saver is my secret weapon for a flawless face!
7. Bold Lipstick.
While summer is all about the easy breezy nudes and light pinks, fall is the time to bring out those deep bold colors for your lips. It also happens to be the easiest way to put the color back into your face when it looks like you’ve just seen a ghost. Or got slapped with a wind chill below zero for 15 minutes on your walk to work. If you think you can’t wear a bold lip, do me a favor and just try it (and maybe read this post on my 5 favorite bold lips for a little pep talk). I guarantee that you will turn heads! You will get more compliments than you think, too.
If you’re looking for an easy introduction into the bold lip, try this Lip Sheer in Currant, Plum, or Scarlet (if you’re into the classic red lip). It’s a beautiful texture that also moisturizes while it’s on (great for dry weather) and it wears off really well. No awkward gaps at the corners of your mouth or chunky clumps of product on your lips. If you’re read my post on why you should be reading the chemicals in your beauty products, then you know that products that stay a long time (like long lasting lipsticks) usually have toxic chemicals in them. So, rest easy and know you can rock a killer bold lip without any of that nasty stuff!
That’s the list – these are the 7 beauty must haves I swear by for upping your beauty routine this fall. What I love about them is that they are all easy. You can incorporate these products into your routine whether you’re a makeup junkie or you don’t use anything on your face at all! Whether you’re 15 years old or 50, these products are for all ages! Conveniently, these beauty must haves can be used throughout winter too – you might just need to change up the way you use them or up the use! So think of this as a long term investment, not just something for one season.
As always, if you have any questions on these beauty must haves, shoot me an email! I love talking beauty with you guys!

The thing that usually freaked me out about body scrubs is that my skin is super sensitive. If your mother likes it; however, it must be worth a try. I know firsthand how hard it is to convince moms!

I remember thinking that oils would be the worst thing ever for my skin since I have such horrific acne, but instead it ended up helping my skin clear up a little bit! I love oils now and use them everywhere, just like you suggest. Bold lips are also a must ;)
