As someone who is a fan of 4-day-old-hair, dry shampoo is an essential in my beauty arsenal. That said, I’ve heard a ton of questions lately about how to achieve the perfect “lived in” look. So, here are my tips on how to use dry shampoo.
The first step of incorporating dry shampoo is to find a good product. I’ve tried bunches over the years and have a favorite powder one and a favorite spray. I feel like spray is easier to use (avoids chalky roots or white residue) and I’ve just started using Eva NYC’s Freshen Up Dry Shampoo. And I’m in love, y’all!
Spray a few inches away from your scalp.
Spraying too close to your scalp distributes a high concentration of product in a small area. You don’t want that. Spraying from further away gives you more control over what you’re doing. So, even if you
Don’t use too much.
You can always add more product but you can’t always take it away. Unless of course, you want to jump in the shower all over again. Blow drying my hair is my least favorite beauty routine so I would do anything to avoid that. Therefore, I err on the side of not enough product.
Only apply to the top 3 inches.
You’ll want to spray the dry shampoo to the areas actually producing oils. The ends of your hair don’t get greasy so they don’t need them!
Pro tip: if you have fine hair, dry shampoo can be used to give your braid a little more texture! If you have fine hair like me, this Freshen Up Dry Shampoo will also help you add a little volume!
Don’t massage it in immediately after spraying.
Since the product will be wet, you’ll want to let it dry a little before massaging. Brush your teeth, pick out your outfit, do something else while the product dries a little. You can even put it on your hair before bed and let it work its magic overnight. Wake up with an oil-free scalp? That’s beauty sleep right there!
Work it in.
You wouldn’t just put shampoo on your head and not rub it around, right? Same thing here! Do a little massaging to make sure the product hasn’t affected the consistency of your roots (i.e. made it too matte). Don’t over-work it but master balance. This Eva NYC spray is pretty weightless so it shouldn’t be much of a concern!
Have you used dry shampoo before? Have you tried Eva NYC’s?
