There are those days when I wear outfits that are really inside my comfort zone. Then, there are other days when I wear things that aren’t. As a relatively curvy girl, bodycon dresses aren’t typically something I have in my closet. From yesterday’s post, you might notice flowy fits are more my thing. Until this grey ruched bodycon dress.
As I mentioned, bodycons remind me of my young years. Mostly, nights spent in the club where they were perfectly appropriate. Truth be told, I’ve never had the perfect figure. I’ve never loved my wide bone structure, my more muscular build, or the areas I hold my weight (hips and derrière). I tried to fight it forever but I can’t. It’s hereditary. My sister and I both are shaped the same way so it’s always fun to lament about it with each other! And if you’re thinking to yourself that I’m crazy right now, that I’m somehow delusional in what I think about my shape, just think – what if I’m just that good at dressing to flatter my figure? Might make you take a few more notes, right? I just prefer the term realistic.
These days, I rarely find myself in bodycons. Not comfortable with all that this shape shows off (mostly, from behind), I wanted to try styling this dress in a more age-appropriate way. Could I make it practical? I tried. The long sleeved cut makes this dress a little less revealing. The ruching in the front is also uber flattering and hides everything you could want it to. Ruching is a miracle style. It hides all the bumps and curves that you want to be hidden. The only thing that I wish is that there was more ruching in the back of this dress! If grey isn’t your color, there are 3 other colors available too.
On sizing, I’d recommend sizing up though – otherwise, you’ll end up pulling down this dress all day long and it also gives this cut a little less of a form hugging fit! If you live in a warmer climate, this dress also comes as a tank dress which can easily be layered under cardigans as well. See below for all the colors it comes in!
To make myself a little more comfortable with this bodycon shape, I layered a cardigan over this dress. I love the heathered texture of this sweater (which also comes in grey)! I will definitely be styling this for the office over my favorite $28 tunic too (also seen here). Lots of options with this one since the pink is subtle!
I’m also breaking out these over the knee boots which I shared when they went on sale! I love this brand (I own them in black already). The heel is super comfortable and the tie at the back of the leg helps them stay up really well. Stay tuned for more ways to style them this fall. I bought this in black a couple of springs ago and am SO HAPPY they’ve launched more colors and long sleeve versions. I feel you on not loving my shape, but this dress makes me feel so confident. Glad I’m not alone!
Love this on you! I hold my weight in the same place as you and live in Chicago (HEY GIRL!) so, I feel your pain! I have this dress and I love it BUT I sized up and it’s so long on me. I’d love to wear it with OTK boots, but I’m 5’1″ and the dress goes to my knees. Any suggestions on what to pair it with?
