Last week’s Friday Five was all about how to survive winter physically. This week? I’m sharing my tips on how to survive winter mentally!
I’d argue that mentally, winter gives a girl more challenges than just the bitter cold. How many days of no sunshine can someone get excited about? Being from Southern California, this was one of the hardest adjustments to life in the Midwest. But don’t worry, I took notes during my first winter. Here’s my plan for surviving my second!
How to Survive Winter Tip #1: Get away.
There’s nothing better than planning a winter getaway (or so I’ve learned). That phrase never made sense to me until I lived in Chicago! This year, I’m getting more strategic about where we are traveling December through April. Warm weather only, please! Matt wants to go to baseball’s spring training? Heck yes – I’ll take either Florida (we went to Tampa last season!) or Arizona! Beats below zero temperatures and wind chill any day. If you can, try to escape the cold at least once. If for nothing more than to thaw your bones.
How to Survive Winter Tip #2: Date nights.
Plan a few date nights for you and a guy. Whether it’s your husband or your latest Bumble crush, the promise of romance will warm you up. Take the opportunity to enjoy the things winter has to offer by trying one of these winter date nights ideas.
How to Survive Winter Tip #3: Take on a project or hobby.
If there’s one things I learned last year is that people tend to stay inside a lot more (duh). Friend events tend to get cancelled last minute if the weather is looking grim. The thrill of fresh snow wears off quickly for the long time Midwesterners! So, pick up a hobby to entertain yourself at home. Or, take on a mini project like redesigning your bookshelf or creating a cozy corner in your bedroom. Have fun seeing all the pieces come together!
How to Survive Winter Tip #4: Create a “to watch” list.
Whether Netflix or Hulu is your app of choice, start adding shows or movies to your queue. The worst thing is sitting down to watch something and spending an hour just searching for what you want to watch! So plan ahead and start keeping a list now (even if it’s on your iPhone)! Matt and I recently re-watched the entire series of The Office because we’re really into comedies!
How to Survive Winter Tip #5: Plan events with friends.
I should say, “and actually do them!” It’s so easy to cancel when you’re tired after the work week or the weather outside is frightful. However, stick to your plans. Try a new restaurant or go to a local event – the change of pace might just be the motivation you need to get outside of the house! Plus there’s nothing like good friendships to warm your heart. If nothing else, you can commiserate over the terrible cold together!
