Friday Five: 5 Steps to Make the Perfect Flower Arrangement

Friday Five is back! After a 2 week hiatus thanks to the biggest shopping event of the year – the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale – we are back on track with this fun little Friday series! Today’s topic is something I feel like every girl wishes she was better at: arranging flowers. So I asked Miss Daisy to share 5 easy tips for creating the perfect floral bouquet.

Now I’m by no means a professional florist. I wish I was! It’s so therapeutic. But also can be completely frustrating too. Flowers die, different types of blooms don’t look right together, and it takes an artistic eye which not everyone has. I did the flower arrangements for my sister’s bridal shower earlier this year and boy was it stressful! So, I wanted a professional to break it down for us. Here’s what Miss Daisy had to say!

Step 1.

Remove the floral packaging and lay out the flowers on a clean surface. Carefully remove wilting petals and any excess leaves that would be touching the water in your vase to prevent bacterial growth.

Step 2.

Use sharp scissors or a knife to cut the bottoms of the stems at an angle, and place your elements in a bucket of cold water to ensure hydration.

Step 3.

Fill a clean vase with cold water and flower food.

Step 4.

You will be designing your flowers in a hand tie style instead of directly into the vase. Starting with your bigger elements first, add one stem at a time to your cluster to create a dome shape. You can gently pull your stems up or down to improve the shape.

Step 5. 

Wrap a clear elastic hair tie or rubber band to secure your stems. Hold your hand tie next to the vase to measure how much to trim. The flowers should rest on the rim of the vase.

Bonus Tips:

1. Source florals from your local markets. Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods have great fresh flowers! Be mindful of choosing the freshest flowers and avoid wilted or bruised petals.
2. To keep your flowers as fresh as possible, trim the stems and change out the water daily. Keep away from direct sunlight and air conditioning.
