Ever since I’ve gotten more into skincare (saying I’m into it is an understatement, I’m obsessed), I’ve been getting more and more questions on Instagram about common skin issues. So, I thought I’d share some of the most asked questions I get in hopes of helping you get one step closer to perfect skin. While it may be a process, you can always feel free to send me questions!
So what are the most common skin issues I’ve gotten questions about?
5 COMMON SKIN ISSUES & HOW TO FIX THEM
1. Acne.
Whether you have a weekly breakout or one a month, toner is going to be your best friend. After you wash your face (I strongly recommend this face wash for all skin types), toner gets rid of dead skin cells and removes excess oils from the skin. It works to reduce pore size and unclog them which, as we know, are top causes of acne. Toner helps regulate the pH balance in your skin which can often get out of whack depending on what cleaner you use.
You can use a toner that you apply with your fingertips or you can choose to use pads. Pads make it really easy especially if you don’t like touching product and you only need one pad for your whole face. As you guys know, I got Matt started on these toner pads because he’s a guy and one, doesn’t get giddy over the thought of a skincare routine and two, hates touching product with his fingers. The toner pads have drastically reduced the number of breakouts he’s had. They’re also significantly easier to travel with.
Note that if you have severe acne, you should consult a dermatologist as toner won’t likely be enough on it’s own!
2. Dark spots or acne scars.
This one is super frustrating because they don’t go away overnight! And you might not like my answer. Most bleaching products contain a chemical called hydroquinone. Hydroquinone has been linked to causing cancer. If you have a one time scar, one round of any product that contains this chemical might be fine. However, if you struggle with acne over the course of years or know that you are prone to brown spots or melasma, I wouldn’t recommend it.
So is there hope? Here’s a safer and usually cheaper option I would try first. Beautycounter has a line of products infused with vitamin C which reduces the appearance of dark spots. It’s going to be a slower and more subtle process and the results will vary by person. I’ve heard some amazing results from people using the face oil. Personally, I use that face oil to keep my melasma in check. I know that whenever I’m in the sun, it will get worse. After a few weeks, the intensity of my spots lessens using that face oil morning and night. If you need more details on why face oil should be part of every skincare routine, read this post. This is the one miracle product!
The other product I would recommend is this face mask. Use it once a week to deep clean skin and double up on the vitamin C. Your skin will thank you. There is also a facial mist but I find that product to be harder for most people to incorporate into their routine. It’s more unusual so I would only recommend if you’re committed to mists! For a discount, you can purchase all 3 brightening products as part of this collection or this sample sized set if you’re looking for a budget friendly option!
3. Oily skin.
Face oil, face oil, face oil! If your skin is oily, it’s working hard to overproduce oils. Incorporating face oil into your daily routine trains your skin to stop overproducing oil. Start slow with 1 or 2 drops mixed into your regular moisturizer. Over time, you can bump it up as your skin gets used to it. Face oil has a bunch of other properties such as moisturizing, anti-aging, and creating that coveted glow. Read more about it here.
I would recommend this balancing face oil if this is your primary concern! You can also use the face oil I recommended above if you have dark spots and oily skin. It will do double duty on both issues.
4. Dryness.
You guessed it, face oil yet again. This is why I say face oil is a miracle product. Face oil will act to moisturize dry skin by adding extra oils into the skin. I typically mix it into this lightweight moisturizer which adapts to your skin. I would recommend this for less severe cases especially going into spring and summer. For extreme dryness, incorporate a thicker night cream like this one. I’ve heard people swear by it – even the ones that live up in Canada!
5. Wrinkles.
Once wrinkles form, it’s next to impossible to get rid of them through creams or serums. Botox is the only answer. Since I haven’t personally tried botox, turn your focus to preventing more. Serums typically contain the most “active ingredients”. Active ingredients have the largest impact when it comes to anti-aging. Here are the details on how to use a serum. My favorite serum is this one by Jurlique. This one is on my list of items to try next since I love this line’s lotion.
