When I talked about my 7 must have beauty products for fall, I casually mentioned that I had also become a Beautycounter Consultant. Not sure if you would be interested in that sort of thing, I didn’t talk much about it. I should have. I got so many questions about what that meant, what Beautycounter is, and maybe most importantly, how to earn a side income by being a Consultant. So let me try to answer all of those questions!
PS. Thank you so much to those of you who kept asking me when this post would be live!
For a little bit of background, I worked at Beautycounter’s corporate headquarters back in Los Angeles. As you guys know, I still work full time in finance which is why you see me posting the outfits I wear to work every day over on Instagram. Anyway, I worked in finance and analytics at Beautycounter so I know a lot about the company, even more about the products (and the ingredients that go into them), and I helped design the compensation plan while I was there. I definitely have an advantage since I worked at corporate but my passion for the company also helps!
What is Beautycounter?
Beautycounter is a personal care and beauty product company that is on a social mission to rid our products of toxic chemicals. These chemicals can cause everything from dermatitis to infertility to cancer. Yes, cancer. This comes as a shock to most people, but the FDA does not regulate the personal care products very well. There are only 30 partially banned ingredients in the United States compared to 1,300+ in the EU. Which means that an American company can put almost anything on the label, get creative with their marketing, and trick you into using something that can actually cause you harm. And they do. It’s scary.
Beautycounter has banned 1500+ chemicals that are known to cause harm from their products. They not only sell products with safer formulas but they actively partake in legislation to get the FDA to tighten up the rules too. While many companies are starting to proactively remove toxins from their products (see here for a list of the most common toxic chemicals I see on labels), there’s a long list and a ways to go. Basically Beautycounter is the only US brand you can trust 100%.
Why did I join?
I think the better question is why did I wait so long. Honestly, I never thought of myself as the type of girl to hold tupperware parties or try to convince people that they needed a certain product. It’s just plain awkward sometimes. And I’m just not that aggressive. I love doing things on my own terms and don’t have a ton of free time to devote to building a business in the traditional way. However, I love being helpful. And if I’ve found the secret to looking 5 years younger or know of something that can help someone I care about look or feel better, I’m all about sharing those secrets. I’ve got you!
Over the last year, I’ve gotten a ton of questions from friends, family, and you guys on my beauty routine. Since Beautycounter is becoming a larger part of that routine, I felt more of an urge to be a bigger part of Beautycounter in return. I also happen to be a very passionate person about almost everything in life. It’s the Sagittarius in me. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become more and more interested in safe beauty. Watching a movement happen wasn’t enough for me. I wanted to be part of it. I wanted to be a little more proactive, educate my loved ones, and help make safe products available to more and more people. The generous compensation structure and ease with which you can run your business was an added bonus. So, I became a Consultant.
I’m only a week in and already feel like this has been a rewarding experience. I love talking to each and every one of you about products that work and making recommendations based on your needs. I will never make a product recommendation that I don’t believe works either. I just don’t see the value in that. I’ll be 100% open about the Beautycounter products that I swear by and the ones that are just decent.
As I learned from working in the beauty industry, it’s really difficult to make 100+ products that are the best in market. Most companies only have one or two. Fortunately, Beautycounter has quite a few that really stand out. If you’re curious which ones I swear by, here’s a quick (and short) list of my favorite products. I have a lot more but if I really had to pare it down, this list is it!
- Face Oil (and here’s why)
- Cream Cleanser – So gentle you can use it on your eyes to remove your eye makeup.
- Sugar Body Scrub – The best body exfoliator I’ve every tried. Also makes an amazing gift for mom.
- Tint Skin (AKA foundation) – My skin improved after using this for only 2 weeks.
- Lip Sheers – Super creamy, moisturizing, and some of the most universally flattering colors.
- Hair Serum and Hair Oil – This combo is singlehandedly bringing my damaged hair back to life.
I have a ton more products that I use on a regular basis and I’ll keep sharing them with you guys here and over on Instagram Stories! If you have any questions about a specific product, just ask me and I’ll tell you what I really think! I’m really excited to take this next step and share it with you all!
What kind of background is required to be a Consultant?
None. All you need is a passion for safe beauty products. It is helpful to have a social circle and be open to learning about the company and toxic chemicals too but not necessary. Your mentor will help coach you through the rest and you’ll learn more through experience.
Being a Consultant is a great way to earn extra income at your own pace. Whether your day job just isn’t cutting it, you’re a stay at home mom looking for a sustainable way to help out the family, or you really love safe beauty, it’s a great organization to be a part of with countless rewarding moments. The best part is that you’re in control too. You have the resources there when you want them and there’s no pressure.
How do I join?
It’s really easy. You can sign up through their website here. If you’re looking for a Consultant to mentor you and help you build a successful business, I’d be happy to do so. There’s a lot to learn and while it’s not difficult, it’s always nice to build a support system. I’m really laid back too and am a strong proponent that you do things at your pace. I won’t be pushing you to sell or do anything you’re not comfortable with. I’m just there to help you earn more!
The sign up process is really easy. First, you need an account. Don’t worry, just click here and it will prompt you through the process. When you get to the “Choose a Mentor” page, make sure that you see my name (Jennifer Colgrove) under the “Your Mentor” section. If you see someone else’s name, you can search for mine on the right side! After that, you can select me and it will prompt you for a few more account details like birthday, SSN (This is necessary for tax purposes because you will be paid so this is like a job! Trust me, it’s safe!), etc.
Then, you will need to purchase a Consultant Starter Kit which gives you some great resources and background on the company and also being a Consultant. I think my order total was about $75 but it’s worth it. You will also have the option to purchase some sets at huge discounts so you can start to get acquainted with the products (these are only available when you sign up so take advantage of them)! After that, it’s time to start earning! Slash, I’ll help you from there if I’m your Mentor!
Note: as a Consultant, you get a substantial discount on products which is an added benefit!
What does it require on a daily/monthly basis?
The best way I can describe being a Consultant is that it’s similar to being a salesperson for any company. Except, instead of selling people things they (usually) don’t need, you’re selling them things they can use: safe personal care products. You can sell (or not sell) at your own pace. It’s up to you to decide when you want to talk to your friends about products, host parties (if you want to), and help people place orders. You get out of it what you put in.
How do I earn money?
Beautycounter is an MLM (multi-level marketing) business. You get a percentage of every purchase you sell. You also get rewarded as you build out your team. Meaning, as Consultants sign up under you, you will get a commission on their sales as well as their team’s sales. There’s a strategy to building out your team and the Consultant you report to (your Mentor) should help you build your business.
It’s just like any other job except you get to talk about something you love (beauty products) and you can work from home. There’s a lot more to it but that’s my job to coach you through as your mentor if it’s something you’re interested in doing!
What if I’m not ready to be a Consultant but want to get involved somehow?
Become a Member here. It’s a really great way to stay connected and it’s basically like a rewards program. It only costs $29 annually and you get a 15% product credit with every order, free shipping on orders over $100, a complimentary gift with purchase (right now it’s my favorite product, the Face Oil 1 for a limited time!), and special exclusive offers throughout the year. It’s a low risk way to learn more about the company for the next year until you’re ready to upgrade to being a Consultant.
Hopefully this post was helpful! I tried to answer all of the questions I got but if I left any out, send me an email or a message on Instagram!
