So I’m engaged! First the outfit, then the story. When Pure Pearls sent me this beautiful necklace, I knew I had to put together a special outfit to do it justice. Did I know it would be the outfit I was proposed to in? No, but I’m not upset they were part of the most amazing day of my life! I had visions of layered pearls and preppy sweaters but then it dawned on me – I really wanted the necklace to stand on it’s own. This deep V dress was the perfect background for the pearls, not to mention Matt helped me pick it out.
On to the story: I always felt a bit bad for the man that had to surprise me with a proposal. Being the serial planner than I am, it would be extremely difficult for any man to plan any event, let alone plan something I didn’t know about! Matt played it well though, letting me believe that we were taking blog photos on our way to a dinner date. A low key Saturday night. I suggested taking photos in the park close to our apartment since we were running late but he said that we’d get better light the more west we went. He was extremely adamant. Did I really believe that the 10 blocks between the park and the ocean would make a difference? No, but I learned that successful relationships are built on saying “yes boss” (sometimes even when you don’t agree) at a dear friend’s wedding last year.
Driving along PCH, we pulled over in Malibu to shoot by the beach as the sun set. It was quite windy which explains why I resemble Medusa in some of the photos above. Matt said “let me get a photo of your back”. My response was something to the effect of “fine, but you know that’s not my favorite” to which he mumbled something about the deep V on the back of my dress. He tells me I was being particularly sassy during that shoot. I maintain that I’m always pretty sassy but whatever, yes boss. I turned back around to find him down on one knee – my heart was racing! Could this be it? THE moment?? He started by saying my name, filled the middle with something about best friendship, love, forever, and ended with being so happy he could finally tell me this was the day. It’s difficult to remember everything – does anyone remember? In hindsight, he had been pretty scatterbrained all day and was barely able to form sentences. What a cutie. We were both shaking – he says it was because he was cold but I know his dad would agree with me that a born and raised Chicago boy isn’t going to be cold in 60 degree weather. I was half crying, half giggling and all I could do was just stare at the most beautiful ring I had ever seen! Obviously, I accepted!
He followed up this proposal with the most romantic dinner at Inn of the Seventh Ray where we got our own gazebo with twinkling lights and a beautiful chandelier. After dinner, we came home, walked into the apartment and was given a small heart attack by my best friends who popped out from behind the couch to surprise me. What a perfect ending to the best day of my life!
