Let it snow! It snowed on and off this week here in Chicago which sparked a bunch of questions over on Instagram. How do you look cute when it’s freezing outside? Well, here are the 5 must have items to survive and stay stylish during winter. Whether you live in the Midwest or are heading off on a ski weekend, pack these 5 things!
1. A good puffer.
I know these can be hard to find. And trust me, I’m going to do a full post on this because it’s so hard to find a good one! As hard as I tried to hold out on buying one, there is nothing like the warmth of a puffer. I love a wool coat for more mild days but in the thick of winter, you need a parka! Here are a few of my favorites that I’ve tried on or want to!
2. A thick scarf.
I know I’ve talked about this scarf a ton. It’s so good. I didn’t think Free People would come through with such a quality item since things are usually more stylish and bohemian there but I truly love this scarf. It’s legitimately the warmest scarf I own (and I have it in 3 colors). It’s long enough to double wrap it to cover and protect your face plus it’s under $50! Here are some more favorites all under $50!
3. Over the knee boots.
I thought that I would need an army of snow boots before I moved here. But in reality, the warmest thing to wear is over the knee boots. Snow boots are great for those really grim days where it’s below zero and snowing a lot. Or even a ski weekend! But they’re a little too clunky for everyday wear!
When I first started walking to work, I always felt like my knees got cold and wondered if they made things like knee warmers (similar to leg warmers). Come to find out, that wasn’t really a thing. The best solution to avoid your knees getting cold is over the knee boots (these made my top 5 boots for winter)! If you really want to layer up, put on some over the knee socks under your boots! Trust me, it’s so warm! Plus, you can wear OTK boots out when it’s not snowing or even when it’s spring. You guys know I love investing in items that you can wear more times and multiple ways!
4. Socks.
Definitely a less glamorous item but trust me, you can make them stylish! Coming from California I owned one or two pairs of thick socks. Most of my socks were for the gym! While they may make your boots fit a little tighter, they really help especially if your feet tend to run cold. Here are some cute socks I’m loving right now!
5. Oil.
Hair oil, face oil, body oil. Bring it on! While this isn’t exactly a piece of clothing, it definitely protects your skin. That’s why it’s one of my must have beauty products to survive the winter. I know it can be intimidating to try something new but trust me, they are so good! For face oil and body oil, start with a drop in your regular moisturizer. If you’re curious, this post breaks down the benefits of using face oil. Body oil is similar but for your body! This hair oil is the first hair oil I’ve felt is actually healing my hair (versus just sitting on top of the strand). It’s one of my must have items to keep your hair healthy during winter. You can use any of these oils regardless of where you live, even in warm climates! They help regulate your skin and hair so it doesn’t over produce oil or under produce!
I hope these must have items help all you girls that are in cold climates or are going to be in one! I own all of these must have items and they’ve helped me survive my first year here in Chicago!
